Oh yeah, nettles -- they look so innocent...
I can remember 50 years ago being stung for the first time -- I've been kind of careful about touching or brushing against unfamiliar plants ever since.
I suppose there are different varieties of nettles throughout the world, but the ones we have growing around here can grow to a height of eight feet or more. They love growing along the edges of creeks, which is where I like to hang out...
Ah, yes, nice portrait of the beasts and, like Donald, I found out the hard way long ago . . and, as BearNaked (no way to approach these plants) reminds me, the name 'nettles' is not universal.
I have to negotiate my way through a nettle patch around the reserve. Nettles are somwhow nostalgic. Long hot summers, bike riding headlong into a nettle patch.

I'd hate to fall in there! But it's a beautiful photo! :D
Ah yes .. nettles! I remember falling into a bed of those as a child, and many, many stings since! Most recently a few weeks back while out with the dogs!
