Weekend Reflections: Woolworths, Stockport

Posted by
sithenah (Greater Manchester/Cheshire, United Kingdom) on 25 December 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

In the run up to Christmas, a children's carousel in Merseyway, Stockport is reflected in the window of the Woolworths' store. The store closed twelve months previously but despite its prestigious position in a busy shopping area, the premises are still vacant.

People add so much to a photo. Nice work. Woolworths is long gone from the US. I worked in our local Woolworths store when I was in High School many years ago. Merry Christmas.

I agree about the inclusion of people in a photograph, any photograph, not just this one. I do like the reflection, especially with the lights on the MGR and the anticipation of fun and laughter. However, it is the old dear with her shopping trolley that really makes it for me.

When I was a child - in the middle of last century - we had Woolworths variety stores. Somewhere in the 60s or 70s these were converted into Woolies grocery stores and now there are two MAJOR grocery outlets Australia wide, Woolies and Coles. They are dominant and control the majority of the market.

@Julie: I've actually got a shopping trolley almost identical the old lady and carry my camera around in it (as well as my shopping).

I was going to ask if this was an old photo... Woolies is my childhood. Sign o' the times that the premises are still vacant. The reflection of course is perfect, every day life.

It is interesting how the reflection brings the two women closer together (and seems to have added a few pounds to the one woman!)

I have such happy memories with Woolworths... It was ages ago lol. It does not prevent the Caroussel from swirling around...
Have a nice Season!

Wonderful reflection! I remember going to Woolworths with my grandmother when I was little, so your photo reflection brings back a lot of memories for me. Happy Holidays!

Great capture! The colors are wonderful, and I love the reflected lights that promise fun and adventure. Alas, Woolworths has been gone for years here. I remember sitting at the lunch counter with a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich and a Green River from the fountain, thanks for bringing back such fun memories.
